EUGENE -- Alexander Cornelissen was dominating for the second day in a row, but the Ducks fell, 6-1, to the No. 51 California Golden Bears in a Pac-10 dual match held Saturday afternoon.
The freshman from Lauwe, Belgium, rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Tyler Browne at the No. 2 position, dominating the match with a mixture of power from the baseline and quickness that allowed him to reach the edges of the court and make a couple of spectacular shots.
"Alex played like an All-American all weekend," director of tennis Nils Schyllander said. "To only drop eight games in two Pac-10 conference matches is a tremendous accomplishment and he's only going to get better."
Ric Mortera played the closest match of the day for the Ducks as he was forced to a super tiebreak after winning the first set, but would ultimately fall 6-7(4), 6-4, (10-6).
The Ducks dropped the doubles point as the Golden Bears' pairs all won 8-5 over their Oregon opponents.
Cornelissen's victory tied the match at 1-1, but seconds later Marcos Verdasco would fall at the top position to Pierre Mouillon, 6-4, 6-4.
Senior Eric Pickard was the last Duck off the court as he rallied to take his match to three sets, but would fall 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 to Kallim Stewart in an intense match throughout.
With the loss, the Ducks fall to 9-11, while the Golden Bears move to 13-7.
The Ducks next take on the Arizona Wildcats Friday, April 13 at 1 p.m. at the Outdoor Tennis Courts, weather permitting.
