'Pick' Wins Senior Day Match, but Ducks Fall 6-1
04/21/07 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE -- On senior day, with the largest crowd of the season behind him and his teammates chanting his name, Eric Pickard won an emotional three-set tiebreak match, but the Ducks would fall, 6-1, to the Washington Huskies Saturday afternoon.
Pickard, the Portland, Ore. native, battled back after losing the first set to pick up the 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6) victory against Mike Ricks at the No. 6 position and the longest match of the afternoon. With all of the other matches finished, the spotlight was on the senior as he played his final match at the Student Tennis Center. He would not disappoint his friends and family, including a group from his freshman year dormitory.
"I am very proud with how far Eric has come this year," director of tennis Nils Schyllander said. "He has been a leader on this young team and that is a big win against a very good opponent."
The rest of the Ducks would not fair so well, as Mike Myrhed was the only other Duck to take his match to a third set. The Swede would fall 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 to Derek Drabble at the No. 5 position.
The seniors at the top of the Huskies lineup were tough for the young Ducks to deal with as freshman Marcos Verdasco was defeated 6-1, 6-1 by Alex Slovic and fellow freshman Alex Cornelissen fell 6-3, 6-4 to Daniel Chu.
"The guys have come a long way this season," Schyllander said. "I wish that our season was beginning next week instead of coming to an end."
The Ducks were swept in the doubles point, with Verdasco and Gallardo putting up the best fight as they fell, 8-4, to Slovic and Chu at the top position.
Oregon next heads to the Pac-10 tournament in Ojai, Calif., which begins April 26.
