Embry Still Hot, but Ducks Cooled by Cougars 4-3

EUGENE - Freshman Geoff Embry remained undefeated, but the Ducks fell to the Brigham Young Cougars in a dual match held Wednesday night at the Student Tennis Center.
Embry moved his record to 6-0 in dual matches on the year and the Phoenix, Ariz. native was once again the first Duck off the court, rolling 6-3, 6-3 over Cassidy Mears at the No. 5 position.
"I thought we played tough in singles and could have had the team victory," director of tennis Nils Schyllander said. "We came out a little tentative in doubles and that hurt us, but we rebounded strong in doubles. It was unfortunate not to get the win, because it was there for the taking."
Oregon moved out to a 2-1 lead after Marcos Verdasco to the No. 1 position match next, 6-3, 6-1, over Dominik Kaufhold. The Madrid, Spain native had been struggling of late, but the dominant performance showed why the coaches have kept him at the top of the lineup.
Johnathan Sanchez would even the team score for BYU by defeating Mike Myrhed at the No. 4 position, 6-4, 6-2.
Francisco Gallardo dropped the No. 3 position match 7-6 (5), 6-3 to BYU's Chip Hand to put the Cougars ahead for good as Alexander Cornelissen was bested in a second set tiebreak and fell 6-4, 7-6(3) to James Ludlow at the No. 2 postion.
Eric Pickard finished out the match on a high note for the Ducks, besting Cale Planck at the No. 6 position in a super tiebreak, 7-6(5), 4-6, (4).
Oregon was swept in the doubles point, with all three matches ending 8-4 in favor of BYU.
With the team loss the Ducks fell to 5-2 on the year, while the Cougars rose to 5-4 on the year after besting Portland earlier in the day.
The Ducks return to action Sunday at 11 a.m. when they face the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos.
