Ducks Gut Out Win Over Raiders, 4-3

Lubbock, Texas -- In a six and a half hour marathon, the No. 42 Oregon Ducks outlasted the No. 54 Texas Tech Red Raiders, 4-3 in a dual match held Friday at the Lubbock Country Club.
As to be expected between to similarly ranked teams, the team score came down to the final match of the evening, which began as a thriller but ended in dominating fashion as the Ducks' Claudia Hirt made the necessary adjustments to pick up the 6-7 (1-7), 6-4, 6-2 win over Maria Jose Andres.
The doubles point ended up being the difference for the Ducks, and that too was a battle from start to finish as it came down to the final doubles match of the evening in which senior Monica Hoz de Vila and sophomore Anna Powaska took the tiebreak, 8-6, and won the match 9-8 (6).
The No. 28 doubles team of Dominika Dieskova and Ana Cecilia Olivos were also forced into a tiebreak, but picked up the victory, 9-8 (1).
In the rest of singles action, the Ducks picked up victories at the two position and the four position as Olivos cruised 6-4, 6-2 over Lakann Wagley and Powaska rallied from a second set letdown to win 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 over Anne Sophie Fankam.
The Ducks will face the Alabama Crimson Tide Saturday at 1 p.m. in Lubbock, Texas.
