Jenkins' Three RBI Falls Just Short
05/12/06 | Softball
TEMPE, Ariz. ? Seventh-ranked Arizona State and the University of Oregon softball team finally got to finish their Pac-10 opener. It just came six weeks after the start of conference play.
On Friday, Arizona State won the halted game 2-1 before winning the regularly scheduled game 4-3. With the two wins, Arizona State improves to 46-13 overall, 10-10 Pacific-10 Conference while Oregon fell to 24-28, 4-16.
Inclement weather prevented the teams completing the Pac-10 season-opener on Mar. 31 at Howe Field. The game was halted in the bottom of the fifth inning with the Sun Devils leading 2-1, but Oregon was up to bat and had runners on first and second with one out.
The game resumed Friday evening in Tempe, Ariz., with the Sun Devils holding on to their 2-1 lead over the final two innings. The loss dropped Oregon to 24-27 overall, 4-15 Pacific-10 Conference and dashed the Ducks' hopes for postseason play. Oregon needed to win three games over this final weekend to finish above .500 and advance to the NCAA Regional Tournament, beginning next weekend. The Ducks have been to the postseason three consecutive seasons under fourth-year head coach Kathy Arendsen.
Back in March when the game began, Arizona State loaded the bases in the second inning and third baseman Bianca Cruz drove in Rhiannon Baca with a sacrifice fly to right field to give the Sun Devils the first lead of the game, 1-0.
Oregon quickly tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning after senior Beth Boskovich led off the inning with a double down the left field line and later scored on a double by freshman catcher Courtney Shlee.
Baca led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single to left field and pinch runner Himmita Hixon advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bridgette Caron. Hixon went to third on a passed ball by Shlee and then scored on a second passed by to give Arizona State a 2-1 lead.
The Ducks came up in the fifth and Arizona State starter Desiree Serrano walked Oregon senior Dani Baird and Sari-Jane Jenkins to put runners at first and second with one out before the game was called. When it was resumed, designated player Ann Marie Topps singled to load the bases, but Serrano recorded a strikeout to end the threat.
In the second game, ASU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Kaitlin Cochran hit a two-run home run that scored Jessica Mapes, who had singled to lead off the inning. Catcher Kristen Miller added a second two-run home run for the Sun Devils, this time in the second inning, to extend the lead to 4-0.
Oregon rallied in the fifth when Arizona State pitcher Katie Burkhart gave up a two-out walk to Oregon senior Dani Baird followed by a double to junior Suzie Barnes to put runners at second and third. Freshmen Sari-Jane Jenkins got the Ducks on the board with a two-run double to pull Oregon within 4-2.
Jenkins, who had two doubles in the game and accounted for all three of Oregon's RBI, drove in Dani Baird with a double in the seventh to bring the Ducks within a run, 4-3.But Burkart recorded her 11th srikeout of the game to seal the victory.
Oregon and Arizona State wrap up the regular season at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Farrington Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
