Softball Falls 1-0 In Season Finale

TEMPE, Ariz. ? The seventh-ranked Arizona State softball team took the regular season finale, 1-0, from the University of Oregon softball team Saturday afternoon in Tempe, Ariz. Sophomore pitcher Katie Burkhart threw five hitless innings for ASU and senior reliever Desiree Serrano gave up just two hits as the Sun Devils finish the regular season 47-13 overall, 11-10 Pacific-10 Conference while Oregon concludes the season 24-29, 4-17.
Oregon, which has been to the postseason the past three seasons, does not qualify for the regional tournament this season. Four seniors made their final appearances today ? shortstop Breanne Sabol, first baseman Beth Boskovich, outfielder Dani Baird and pitcher Amy Harris. Baird went 1-for-3 in her final game and accounted for one of two Oregon hits. Sophomore third baseman Joanna Gail had Oregon's other hit. Arizona State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Mindy Cowles singled to right field and later advanced to second on a sacrifice by Rhiannon Baca. Cowles then advanced to third on a groundout and eventually scored on a passed ball. It was all the scoring ASU needed as Burkhart and Serrano combined for 12 strikeouts and just two hits.
