Duck Comeback Falls Just Short In Second Game Of Doubleheader; Arizona Sweeps

TUCSON, Ariz. ? The third-ranked Arizona softball team swept a pair of games vs. the University of Oregon softball team Thursday evening, defeating the Ducks 3-1 in the first game before taking game two, 9-5. The first game was a make up game from April 2, when the two teams were rained out in Eugene. With the wins, Arizona improves to 42-9 overall, 13-6 Pacific-10 Conference while Oregon falls to 24-26, 4-14. The Ducks need to win all three of their games vs. Arizona State over the next two days to qualify for the NCAA Regional tournament, which begins next weekend.
The Ducks came out swinging in the first game to take a 1-0 lead. With two outs, senior Beth Boskovich doubled off the left center field wall and sophomore Lovena Chaput followed with another double to deep center to score Boskovich and give Oregon the first lead of the game. But the Wildcats quickly responded in the top of the second as third baseman Jenae Leles hit the first pitch over the left field wall to tie the game, 1-1. An Oregon error with two outs put designated player Laine Roth on and she came around to score after back-to-back singles by Adrienne Acton and Caitlin Lowe to give Arizona its first lead of the game, 2-1. An RBI by single by Autumn Champion scored Acton to extend the lead to 3-1 later in the inning. Arizona starter Alicia Hollowell (22-4) gave up a single to Oregon junior Suzie Barnes in the third inning and then retired eight consecutive batters before a fifth-inning walk to Barnes. Oregon third baseman Joanna Gail's single to shallow left field in the sixth inning was Oregon's only other hit in the game as Hollowell retired the side in the seventh to secure the victory. In game two of the doubleheader, it was Arizona who took the lead in the first. Lowe led off the inning with a single and then stole second. She advanced to third on a flyout by Kristie Fox and with two outs scored on an RBI double down the left field line by Callista Balko to give Arizona a 1-0 lead. Second baseman Chelsie Mesa made it 2-0 with a single through the right side that scored Balko and make it 2-0. The Wildcats added to their lead in the second inning when Fox doubled to right center to score Acton and Champion to extend the lead to 4-0. A single up the middle by Balko in Arizona's next at bat scored Fox to push the lead to 5-0. Arizona starting pitcher Taryne Mowatt then helped her own cause, hitting a two-run single that scored Mesa and Leles to extend the Wildcats' lead to 7-0. Balko added her third and fourth RBI of the game when she drove in Lowe and Champion ? who had both reached on infield singles ? to make it 9-0 in the third inning. Oregon's offense came alive with two outs in the fifth inning. Kristi Leiter drew a leadoff walk and pinch hitter Ann Marie Topps followed with a single up the middle put runners at first and second. With two outs, freshman Sari-Jane Jenkins singled to score Kristi Jorgensen, who was running for Leiter. Boskovich then reached on an error by Arizona and Topps scored on the play to make it 9-2. Sophomore Lovena Chaput then pulled Oregon within 9-5 with a three-run home run. The Ducks play Arizona State tomorrow in Tempe. At 5:30 p.m., the two teams will resume a game that was halted in the fifth inning in Eugene on Mar. 31. The Sun Devils are leading 2-1, but Oregon has runners at second and third. Following the conclusion of that game, they will play their regularly scheduled game at 7 p.m.
