“We played much better today,” assistant coach Armando Espinosa said. “We had a lot more energy and seemed much more focused.”
The team of Gustavo Loza and Thomas Bieri won their doubles match in the No. 1 position, defeating Jonathan Kinsella and Ryan Waits, 8-6.
The other Duck doubles teams were right in the thick of their matches as Vlad Pino and Hugh McDonald fell, 8-6 to Ryan McBride and Nick Hegarty. Arron Spencer and Eric Pickard were also right in their match as they fell, 9-7 to Wes Miller and T.J. Bellama.
Eric Pickard won his singles match in a very unconventional way he opened with a tough, 7-6, loss in the first set. Pickard then won the second set, 6-4, as McBride suffered an injury late in the set. He (McBride) was unable to continue the match and was forced to retire giving Pickard the victory.
“I really thought the momentum of the match could have shifted in our favor had Pickard won his first set, and Vlad won his match, who knows how the match might have gone,” Espinosa said.
Thomas Bieri faced No. 104 Kinsella and fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Arron Spencer won the first set of his match with Thomas Biro, 7-5. Biro then won the next two sets to win the match, 6-4, 6-1.
