
Offense, Rice Lead Softball Past No. 8 Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. ? The University of Oregon softball team's offense set the single game hits record (16) and freshman pitcher Melissa Rice earned her first Pac-10 victory, leading the Ducks to a 9-2 win over No. 8 Stanford at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium in Stanford, Calif. With the win, Oregon improves to 18-13 overall, 1-3 Pac-10 while the Cardinal 29-7, 3-3.
The Ducks also tied their single-game doubles record (5) as a total of nine different players had at least one hit on the day and seven players had at least two hits, including Joanna Gail, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles. In all the Oregon offense combined for 16 hits, led by senior Breanne Sabol and juniors Suzie Barnes and Kayleen Hudson. Sabol finished the day 2-for-4 with four RBI, a triple and a double while Hudson went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored. Barnes finished the day 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored. Oregon put the squeeze on in the top of the third inning after Barnes tripled with one out and later scored on a bunt by Sabol to give the Ducks the first lead of the game, 1-0. The Ducks' offense exploded in the fourth inning starting with a solo home run by Hudson that made it 2-0. Oregon then rallied with two outs later in the fourth as pinch hitter Ann Marie Topps doubled to left center and senior Beth Boskovich drove her in with an RBI through the left side to make it 3-0. Barnes singled following Boskovich's at bat to load the bases for Sabol, who drove in three more runs with a triple to center field, extending Oregon's lead to 6-0. Hudson came back up to bat as Oregon went through the order in the inning and added her second RBI of the inning, scoring Sabol with a line drive to center field to make it 7-0. In all, Oregon had seven hits in the inning, including a home run, a triple and a double. Stanford responded in the bottom of the inning as catcher Lauren Lappin and shortstop Maddy Coon led off the inning with back to back singles. After a groundout by Michelle Smith, Stanford starter Missy Penna, who was relieved by Laura Severson in the sixth, hit an RBI single to score Lappin and make it 7-1. In the bottom of the sixth, Stanford's offense rallied with two outs to pull within 7-2 when second baseman Lindsay Key drove in Maddy Coon with a double to deep left field. Oregon reliever Alicia Cook then came in for Rice and with runners at second and third, Cook struck out Stanford right fielder Anna Beardman to end the Cardinal rally. Oregon immediately got the run back in the top of the seventh after back to back doubles by Gail and freshman Sari-Jane Jenkins made it 8-2 Oregon. Boskovich added to the score, making it 9-2 with a single through the right side to score Jenkins.
