Cook And Harris Shut Down Visiting Vikings
04/13/06 | Softball
EUGENE ? Oregon starter Alicia Cook allowed just two hits and senior Amy Harris retired six consecutive batters to pick up her second save of the season and lead the University of Oregon softball team to a 2-0 victory over Portland State at Howe Field Wednesday afternoon. With the win, Oregon improves to 19-13 overall while the Vikings fall to 23-12.
Cook, who gave up back to back singles to start the game, did not allow another hit and faced the minimum number of batters over the next four innings, improved to 3-4 overall this season. She had four strikeouts and walked none. Harris relieved Cook in the sixth inning and retired all six batters she faced. Portland State starter Michelle Hext went the distance, falling to 9-7 on the season.
Offensively, Oregon had seven hits led by junior Kayleen Hudson, who went 2-for-3 on the day. Six different players had at least one hit for the Ducks. Senior Breanne Sabol and junior Suzie Barnes accounted for Oregon's two RBI.
Oregon got all of its scoring in the third inning as Hext gave up a leadoff walk to designated player Ann Marie Topps, who later scored on an RBI by Barnes. Sabol made it 2-0 Oregon with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored first baseman Kristi Leiter, who had singled earlier in the inning.
The Ducks return to Pac-10 action this weekend, traveling to Corvallis to face No. 8 Oregon State Friday at 4 p.m.
