Chaput's Homer Not Enough To Lift Ducks Past Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. ? Oregon sophomore Lovena Chaput hit a three-run home run to give the University of Oregon softball team a sixth-inning lead over the eighth-ranked Stanford Cardinal, but the Cardinal offense responded in the bottom of the inning and defeated the Ducks 7-3 in Stanford, Calif., Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Stanford improves to 29-6 overall, 3-2 Pacific-10 Conference while Oregon falls to 17-13, 0-3.
Defensively, the Ducks turned three double plays and committed no errors. Sophomore pitcher Alicia Cook (2-4), who relieved starter Melissa Rice in the fifth inning, took the loss for Oregon while Stanford starter Missy Penna improved to 18-2 with the win.
Stanford center fielder Catalina Morris led off the bottom of the first with a walk and scored on an RBI double by catcher Lauren Lappin later in the inning to put the Cardinal ahead 1-0. Stanford third baseman Michelle Smith singled to lead off the fifth inning and after a Penna groundout, Erin Howe singled to put two runners on with one out. Desginated player Becky McCullough made it 2-0 Stanford with an RBI single up the middle that scored Smith.
The Ducks took their first lead of the game in the sixth inning as senior Beth Boskovich singled to lead off the inning and Penna then walked senior Breanne Sabol to put two on. Chaput then hit her second three-run home run of the season to make it 3-2 Oregon.
Stanford shortstop Maddy Coon quickly tied the game, driving in Morris with a single to shallow left field in the bottom of the sixth. The Cardinal loaded the bases after an intentional walk to Smith and Penna then helped her cause with her first career grand slam to make it 7-3 Stanford.
Penna retired the first two batters in the seventh before giving up a walk to Oregon catcher Courtney Shlee. With two outs, Penna forced a groundout to end the game.
