A Perfect Day For Duck Softball
04/28/06 | Softball
EUGENE ? Oregon sophomore Alicia Cook pitched the program's first-ever perfect game and the Duck offense exploded for nine runs on 12 hits as the University of Oregon softball team defeated No. 5 Stanford, 9-0, at Howe Field Friday afternoon. The win snaps a five-game losing skid for the Ducks, who improve to 20-18 overall, 2-8 Pacific-10 Conference. Stanford falls to 33-11, 6-7.
Cook (4-4) retired all 15 batters she faced and had one strikeout. It is Oregon's second no-hitter this season and 14th overall, but the first-ever perfect game. "I just wanted to keep hitting my spots and help us get the win," Cook said. "We had been struggling to put everything together and today I got great defensive plays and our offense really helped carry me. It just feels good to get the win." Offensively, senior Breanne Sabol went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI while leadoff hitter Suzie Barnes was a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI. The top of Oregon's lineup was stellar as the first four batters went 9-for-12 with four runs scored, four RBI, three doubles and a triple. Sophomore Joanna Gail hit her second career grand slam to finish with four RBI and left fielder Lovena Chaput went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Oregon's offense struck first as the Ducks took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Designated player Kristi Jorgensen reached after being hit by a Missy Penna pitch and Barnes drove her in with a one-out triple down the field line. Freshman Sari-Jane Jenkins made it 2-0 with an RBI single that scored Barnes and Sabol continued the rally, driving in Jenkins with a double to deep left center field. The Ducks extended the lead to 4-0 on an RBI double by Beth Boskovich that scored Sabol. In all, Oregon had five hits, including two doubles and a triple, in the third inning to take a comfortable 4-0 lead. Sabol hit her second double of the game in the fifth inning and advanced to third on a single by Boskovich. Chaput then hit the Ducks' fourth double of the game to score Sabol and make it 5-0. Stanford reliever Laura Severson then loaded the bases by walking junior Kayleen Hudson setting up a grand slam by Gail to end the game in the bottom of the inning.
