Softball Splits With No. 7 California
04/29/06 | Softball
EUGENE ? Oregon pitcher Amy Harris returned from injury to lead the University of Oregon softball team to a 5-1 win over No. 7 California at Howe Field Saturday afternoon before the Bears responded with a 4-0 win in the second game of the afternoon.
Oregon (21-19 overall, 3-9 Pacific-10 Conference) and California (39-10, 7-7) began the afternoon by resuming a game that had started in Berkely, Calif., Apr. 7, but was cut short in the top of the third inning because of rain. At the time the game was halted, Oregon was leading 2-0 and had the bases loaded with one out. On Saturday, the Bear defense held tight, retiring Oregon's first two batters to get out of the jam.
Cal's offense then got on the board in the bottom of the third inning when first baseman Julie Meyer doubled to shallow left field and advanced to third on a groundout by designated player Gina Leomiti. Meyer then scored on a passed ball to make it 2-1.
Oregon got the run back in the top of the fifth on an RBI double by Kayleen Hudson that scored freshman Sari-Jane Jenkins, who had singled earlier in the inning. With two outs in the inning, catcher Amie Morris reached on a fourth California error, which allowed Hudson to score from second and extend Oregon's lead to 4-1. Senior Dani Baird then doubled to right center field to put runners at second and third and Cal pitcher Lauren Frankiewicz hit Beth Boskovich to load the bases. Frankiewicz then hit Suzie Barnes, which scored Morris to make it 5-1 Oregon.
After allowing two runners to reach in the bottom of the fifth, Oregon pitcher Amy Harris retired nine straight batters to end the game and improve to 9-4 this season.
In the second game of the day, California wasted little time establishing a lead, taking a 4-0 advantage in the first inning. The Bears rallied with two outs, stringing together four consecutive hits, including a double by shortstop Chloe Kloezeman that accounted for two RBI.
After allowing a hit to Breanne Sabol in the first inning, Cal starter Kristina Thorson retired 11 consecutive batters ? six by strikeout ? before giving up a two-out double to Hudson in the fifth inning. Thorson the forced a popout by Joanna Gail to prevent the Ducks from scoring. Hudson was the only batter to make it to second base in the game. After Hudson's hit, Thorson retired the final seven batters of the game and improved to 28-7 this season with the win. Oregon starter Alicia Cook (4-5) took the loss for the Ducks. Reliever Elise Orange came in for Cook in the first and scattered just three hits, walked none and allowed no runs.
