Oregon Defense Holds, Offense Falls Short at Cal
02/05/06 | Women's Basketball
BERKELEY, Calif. ? The University of Oregon women's basketball team held California to less than 50 points for the second time this season, but the Ducks failed to muster enough offense of their own, falling 49-39 in front of 2,324 fans at Haas Pavilion.
“The second half was the best we have played on this road trip,” senior guard Brandi Davis said. “Unfortunately, it wasn't enough.”
The Ducks (13-9, 4-8) outscored Cal, 24-21, after halftime and pared a 16-point Bears' lead with 16:57 to play down to four at 41-37 with 4:10 left.
Cal freshman guard Alexis Gray-Lawson scored the next seven points, including the game-clincher on a fast break layup with 51 seconds to go, making the score 47-37.
Freshman Devanei Hampton tied Gray-Lawson with a game-high 15 points. Hampton also posted a game-high 11 rebounds. A third Bear freshman, forward Ashley Walker, also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Chelsea Wagner led the Ducks with 11 points and six rebounds. The senior guard from Springfield, Ore., hit a pair of three-pointers in the second half to lead Oregon's late charge.
“We made some stupid fouls early in the game, but came back and played great defense to give ourselves a chance,” Wagner said.
The battle of the boards went to Oregon, 41-38, with eight Ducks grabbing three or more. Neither team cracked 30 percent from the field. Cal shot 29 percent and the Ducks hit 24.5 percent for the game.
California grabbed a 28-15 lead at the half, as both teams struggled to put the ball in the basket. Oregon made 17 percent (5-of-29) to the Bears 35 percent (8-of-23).
Hampton came off the bench to lead all players with 11 points and seven rebounds in the first half. Davis was the only Duck with more two points, scoring nine on 3-of-7 shooting from beyond the three-point line.
A slow start stalled the Ducks early on, with 7:50 ticking off the clock before the team's first field goal ? a three-pointer from Davis. That bucket made the score 11-3 in favor of the Bears.
