Chaput's Walk Off Home Run Leads Ducks To Split In Palm Springs
02/25/06 | Softball
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. ? Oregon sophomore Lovena Chaput hit a three-run walk-off home run to lift the Ducks to a 4-2 win over Oklahoma State at the Palm Springs Classic Saturday afternoon. With the win, Oregon improves to 8-7 overall after falling 6-0 earlier in the day to Ohio State.. The Ducks wrap up tournament play tomorrow vs. UC Santa Barbara at 11 a.m.
Oregon trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning and junior Suzie Barnes led off the inning with a single to shallow center field. Freshman Sari-Jane Jenkins, who went 3-for-6 with a double in the two games, then sacrificed Barnes to second and senior Breanne Sabol walked to put runners at first and second. Chaput then hit her first home run of the season to lead Oregon to the win.
Senior pitcher Amy Harris improved to 5-4 with the win, while freshman Melissa Rice (1-1) took the loss vs. the Buckeyes in the first game of the day.
In the day's opener, Ohio State pitcher Jamee Juarez hit three home runs and limited the Duck offense to just two hits to lead the Buckeyes (6-6) to their first win in Palm Springs.
Juarez first helped her cause in the bottom of the second inning, hitting a two-run home run to put the Buckeyes ahead 2-0. Defensively, Juarez stalled an Oregon threat in the fourth inning, retiring three straight batters after the Buckeyes had committed back to back errors to open the inning to put runners at second and third for the Ducks.
Juarez continued to carry Ohio State in the bottom of the fourth inning, hitting her second home run of the game to score Christina Douglas and extend the lead to 4-0. The Buckeyes made it 5-0 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by junior Lauren Daykin that scored Chelsea Baker. Juarez' third home run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth to put Ohio State ahead 6-0.
In game two, the Ducks trailed 1-0 to Oklahoma State after an RBI single by Shallan Watson in the top of the fourth inning and went down 2-0 in the fifth when Lacy Darity scored an unearned run.
Oregon catcher Amie Morris doubled with one out in the bottom of the fifth and freshman Sari-Jane Jenkins drove her in with an RBI single through the right side to pull the Ducks within a run, 2-1. Oregon had a hit in the sixth before its seventh inning rally.
