02/18/06 | Softball
LAS VEGAS, Nev. ? The 18th-ranked University of Oregon softball team split on day two of the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic, defeating Hawaii 5-3 before falling 6-1 to Colorado State in its second game. The Ducks (5-4) wrap up tournament play tomorrow vs. UTEP at 11 a.m.
In Saturday's opener, freshman pitcher Melissa Rice (1-0) picked up her first victory of the season while senior Amy Harris recorded her first save of the season. Harris (3-2) took the loss against Colorado State. Rice had seven strikeouts and just two walks in five innings of work and Harris finished the day with eight strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work.
Offensively, sophomore Lovena Chaput led the Ducks, going 4-for-8 with two runs scored and two RBI in the two games while freshman Sari-Jane Jenkins went 2-for-6 with two runs scored.
Left fielder Brandi Peiler got Hawaii's first hit of the game in the fourth inning ? a solo home run to right center field ? to give the Wahine a 1-0 lead.
An RBI by Oregon senior Beth Boskovich in the bottom of the fifth tied the game, 1-1, and the Ducks took advantage of an error by Hawaii right fielder Malama Manuma to take the lead 2-1. A two-RBI triple by Chaput in the bottom of the sixth scored Jenkins and senior Breanne Sabol to extend Oregon's lead to 4-1. An RBI single up the middle by Oregon third baseman Joanna Gail made it 5-1
Hawaii pulled within 5-3 on a two-out, two-run home run by Tanisha Milca in the seventh inning, but Hawaii shortstop Julie Franklin grounded out to end the game.
In game two of the day, Colorado State scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the first lead of the game, 2-0. Colorado State third baseman Lauren Cusick made it 3-0 with a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning.
Oregon loaded the bases in the top of the fourth inning on a double by Chaput, a hit batter by Colorado State pitcher Kim Klabough and a single by Gail, but the Rams turned a double play to get the first two outs and Klabough forced an Oregon groundout for the third out.
Colorado State first baseman Renee Welty hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to extend the Rams' lead to 6-0.
A solo home run by Sabol ? her third of the season ? put Oregon on the board in the sixth inning, but Klabough allowed just one run in the seventh to improve to 4-0 on the season.
