Ducks Dominate Miners, Win 8-0 In Five Innings

LAS VEGAS, Nev. ? The 18th-ranked University of Oregon softball team used a balanced attack of offense and defense to defeat the UTEP Miners, 8-0, in five innings on the final day of the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. With the win, Oregon improves to 6-4 overall this season.
Defensively, senior Amy Harris tossed a one-hitter and had seven strikeouts in three innings of work to improve to 4-2 on the season. The Duck offense combined for nine hits and eight RBI. Senior shortstop Breanne Sabol led the way, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBI, a double and two stolen bases, while freshman Sari-Jane Jenkins hit her first career home run.
Oregon's offense got going early after a one-out double by Sabol in the bottom of the first inning followed by an RBI single from sophomore Lovena Chaput put the Ducks up 1-0.
Back to back singles by sophomore Amie Morris and junior Suzie Barnes in the bottom of the third put runners at first and second with no outs. Jenkins then reached on a fielders choice and Morris was out on the play, but Sabol drove in Jenkins and Barnes in Oregon's next at bat to make it 3-0. Chaput walked to put runners at first and third and senior Beth Boskovich double to deep left field to score both runners and make it 5-0. A two-out RBI by Kristi Leiter later in the inning scored Boskovich to extend Oregon's lead to 6-0 after three innings.
Jenkins hit her first home run of the season ? a two run shot to center field ? to score Barnes and put Oregon ahead 8-0 in the fourth.
Oregon reliever Elise Orange gave up a bunt single to lead off the bottom of the fifth, but retired the next three batters to end the game.
