Harris Impressive In 1-0 Loss To No. 4 Tennessee
02/17/06 | Softball
LAS VEGAS, Nev. ? Tennessee pitcher Monica Abbott (3-0) led the fourth-ranked Volunteers to a 1-0 victory over No. 18 Oregon (4-3), tossing her 12th career no-hitter in a 1-0 victory Friday evening at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. In Oregon's first game of the tournament, Utah State defeated the Ducks 7-6 to pick up its second win of the season.
Oregon pitcher Amy Harris (3-1) dueled with Abbott, scattering five hits and not allowing a run until the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh the Duck offense made a run as Suzie Barnes reached on an error by Tennessee (4-0) and advanced to second on the play. Abbott dashed the Ducks' hopes by retiring the next three batters.
Tennessee catcher Shannon Doepking hit a single to lead off the seventh inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Liane Horiuchi. Alicia Brown ? who was running for Doepking ? eventually scored the winning run on an infield single by Sarah Fekete. Fekete finished the game 3-for-3 with a walk to lead the Volunteer offense.
Abbott hit Oregon first baseman Beth Boskovich with a pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning to break up a string of 10 perfect innings over three games. Boskovich advanced to second on a passed ball by Volunteer catcher Shannon Doepking, but Abbott struck out two batters to end the inning.
Abbott and the Tennessee defense allowed just one other baserunner in the game to secure the win.
Earlier in the day, the Aggies took advantage of five Duck errors to win, 7-6. Utah State first capitalized on back-to-back Oregon errors in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead on an single by Aggie center fielder Amanda Carver. The Aggies made it 3-0 in the third on an RBI single by Jessica Garnett that scored Sara Fleming, who had led off the inning with a single.
Oregon pulled within 3-1 in the fourth after a leadoff triple by senior Breanne Sabol, who later scored on an RBI single by senior Beth Boskovich. The Ducks tied it 3-3 in the fifth inning after and RBI each by Kayleen Hudson and Barnes, but Utah State regained the lead, 7-3, in the bottom of the inning.
Oregon's offense came in alive in the sixth inning as the Ducks loaded the bases with no outs after a single each by Lovena Chaput and Boskovich as well as a walk to Joanna Gail. Leiter then doubled to right field to score Chaput and Boskovich and Gail scored after a Utah State pitcher Leslie Higley walked Barnes with the bases loaded to make it 7-6 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
The Ducks threatened in the seventh, but Utah State's defense turned a double play to end the game.
Oregon returns to action tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. vs. Hawaii.
