Softball Splits On Final Day Of Wilson-Demarini Tournament
02/12/06 | Softball
HOUSTON, Tex. ? Sophomore Kristi Jorgensen's deep fly ball to center field scored two runs and led the 22nd-ranked University of Oregon softball team to a 3-1, eight inning victory over the Kansas Jayhawks at the Wilson-Demarini Invitational in Houston, Texas. Earlier in the day, Houston defeated the Ducks 3-0, limiting Oregon's offense to just one hit.
Kansas (2-2) and Oregon (4-1) were knotted 0-0 until the seventh inning. Sophomore catcher Amie Morris then hit a double to deep right field and freshman Sari-Jane Jenkins drove in Kayleen Hudson, who was running for Morris.
Kansas pitcher Serena Settlemier made it 1-1 with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, but Oregon responded with two runs in extra innings to secure the victory.
Pitcher Amy Harris (2-0) allowed three hits and had seven strikeouts in her second complete game victory.
"We started slow offensively, but again I'm really pleased with how we found a way to win," Head Coach Kathy Arendsen said. "Amy pitched a great game and I'm glad we were able to come through."
In the Ducks' first game of the day, Houston led 1-0 after the second inning on an RBI single up the middle by Katie Bush that scored Laurie Wagner. The Cougars added another run in the third inning when catcher Elaina Nordstrom scored from third while Christa Raley was caught trying to steal second.
The Ducks got their first baserunner of the game when Houston starter Angel Shamblin walked Beth Boskovich to lead off the inning, but the Cougars made a double play on a botched Oregon bunt and through five innings, Shamblin had faced the minimum number of batters.
Shamblin helped her cause in the bottom of the inning, leading off with a double to deep right field. She later advanced to third and eventually scored on an Oregon throwing error to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead after five innings.
Jenkins broke up Shamblin's no-hitter with a single in the sixth inning after Suzie Barnes had reached on an error by Houston first baseman Candi Kloecker. Senior Breanne Sabol then hit the ball back at Houston second baseman Jaci Gonzalez, who threw Barnes out at home to preserve the Cougars' shutout.
