No. 2 Cal Softball Shuts Out No. 25 Oregon 1-0

BERKELEY, Calif. ? Oregon junior Amy Harris scattered just five hits, but three first inning hits by the No. 2 California Golden Bears were enough as Cal edged the 25th ranked Ducks 1-0 at Levine-Fricke Field Saturday afternoon. Cal pitcher Kristina Thorson allowed just one hit as the Bears improved to 43-10 overall, 10-7 Pacific-10 Conference while Oregon fell to 32-21, 5-12.
"We played well today and our defense was much improved," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "Today we just couldn't get our offense going, but I thought overall we did play well and Amy [Harris] pitched well for us."
Junior shortstop Breanne Sabol accounted for the Ducks' lone hit of the game ? a bunt single in the fourth inning ? and was 1-for-3 on the day as Thorson allowed the Ducks just two base runners and had six strikeouts.
Cal used three consecutive hits in the first inning and eventually took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Julie Meyer. After the first, Harris (15-12) allowed just two more hits, but the run stood as Thorson and Cal's defense shut down Oregon's offense.
The two teams meet again tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Berkeley, Calif.
