Stanford Softball Defeats Oregon 5-1
05/06/05 | Softball
STANFORD, Calif. ? The fourth-ranked Stanford Cardinal capitalized on five Oregon errors to defeat the Ducks 5-1 at Smith Family Stadium in Stanford, Calif., Friday evening. The loss snaps a five-game win streak for the Ducks (32-20 overall, 5-11 Pacific-10 Conference) and the Cardinal improve to 38-11, 11-5 with the win.
"I'm disappointed because those errors were not typical of our defense," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We had some good at bats, hit the ball well, but we didn't capitalize and we had too many mistakes in the field. The good thing is we can fix those things and come back tomorrow."
Stanford left fielder Jackie Rinehart led off the second inning with an infield single and came around to score later in the inning on an RBI by Tricia Aggabao to give the Cardinal the first lead of the game, 1-0. Catcher Leah Nelson made it 2-0 in the third inning, driving in center fielder Catalina Morris, who had doubled to lead off the inning.
Nelson and Morris combined again in the fifth inning after Morris singled with one out and advanced to second on a passed ball. Nelson drove her in with a two-out single to center field and third baseman Michelle Smith scored later in the inning after an Oregon error to extend the Cardinal lead to 4-0 after five complete innings.
Designated player Anna Beardman scored another unearned run for Stanford in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 5-0
Oregon had a single each by Breanne Sabol, Beth Boskovich and Ashley Richards to load the base with one out in the first inning, but Cardinal pitcher Becky McCullough retired the next two batters to prevent the Ducks from scoring. McCullough scattered just two hits over the next five innings of play and retired 15 of 17 batters.
The Ducks rallied in the seventh inning after a one-out double by T.J. Eadus and a single by Kayleen Hudson. Freshman Joanna Gail had her second RBI in as many games to score pinch runner Dani Baird and put the Ducks on the board. It was as close as Oregon got as the Cardinal defense turned a double play and McCullough forced a pop out to end the game.
Junior pitcher Amy Harris (15-11) took the loss for Oregon and had four strikeouts to move to second all-time at Oregon with 447 career strikeouts.
