Seniors, Harris Lead Ducks To 3-0 Win Over Arizona State
05/01/05 | Softball
EUGENE ? Seniors Ashley Richards and Erin Goodell drove in all three runs and junior pitcher Amy Harris provided another dominating performance as the University of Oregon softball team defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils 3-0 in front of 407 fans at Howe Field Sunday afternoon. It was the final conference game at Howe Field for Richards and Goodell as well as senior pitchers Ani Nyhus and Lindsey Kontra.
"What a tremendous weekend of softball we had for our four seniors," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "I thought we played outstanding on both sides of the ball and came away with two great victories. You can't say enough about what these players have meant to our program so to finish this way at home was great for them."
One day after going 17 innings with Sun Devils and falling 2-1, Oregon came back on Sunday and took the first lead of the game on Richards' two-RBI double in the sixth inning. Richards drove in freshman Lovena Chaput, who had singled to lead off the inning, and shortstop Breanne Sabol, who reached on a fielders choice. Junior Beth Boskovich walked later in the inning and scored on an RBI single up the middle by Goodell to give the Ducks the 3-0 lead.
It was all Oregon needed as Harris (14-10) came back in the seventh inning and shut down Arizona State's offense. After second baseman Jen McCard reached on an Oregon error, Harris struck out Sharee Zaleski, Rhiannon Baca and Michelle Smith to end the game and cap a stellar weekend in which she threw 28 innings, allowed no earned runs and struck out 28 batters.
Goodell and Chaput led Oregon's offense, each going 2-for-3 while Richards finished the day 1-for-3 with her two RBI. Sabol accounted for the Ducks' other hit and now leads the team with a .342 batting average.
The Ducks have one more appearance at Howe Field this season as they host Portland State Tuesday at 4 p.m. in a non-conference game. Oregon then travels to California to face UC Davis in a doubleheader Thursday (1:30 p.m.; 3:30 p.m.) before returning to conference play against Stanford Friday at 7 p.m. in Palo Alto.
