Softball Shuts Out Portland State In Final Home Game

EUGENE ? Oregon freshman Alicia Cook struck out seven batters in just over three innings of work and the Duck offense had four RBI on six hits to shutout visiting Portland State 4-0 before 370 fans in the final home game of the season. With the win, Oregon secures its 30th win of the season and is now 30-19 overall, 5-10 Pacific-10 Conference while Portland State finishes its season 17-28 overall, 11-8 Pacific Coast Softball Conference.
"We did what we needed to do to send our seniors off on a positive note," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "But there are still two weeks of conference play left and we need to go on the road and continue to play the way we have been playing at home."
Cook (9-6) struck out seven of the 13 batters she faced after relieving senior starter Lindsey Kontra with one out in the fourth inning. In five appearances vs. the Vikings this season, Cook posted a 3-0 record with a 0.59 ERA and had 25 strikeouts. Portland State pitcher Vanessa Holm took the loss and finished the season 3-11 overall.
Senior Ashley Richards drove in freshman left fielder Lovena Chaput in the first inning to put Oregon ahead 1-0 early. The Ducks then added three runs in the fourth inning after an RBI single by Ann Marie Topps, a double by Kayleen Hudson and another single by Suzie Barnes as Oregon led 4-0 after four innings. Topps led the Oregon offense, going 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.
Oregon travels to California to face UC Davis in a doubleheader Thursday (1:30 p.m.) before returning to Pac-10 play vs. Stanford Friday at 7 p.m.
