Softball Drops Civil War Series To Oregon State
04/24/05 | Softball
EUGENE ? In typical Civil War fashion, the games were played to near perfection and both were decided by just one run. In the end, the ninth-ranked Oregon State Beavers swept No. 25 Oregon in a Pac-10 doubleheader before 742 fans at Howe Field Sunday afternoon. The Beavers held on for a 1-0 win in the first game before taking the second game 2-1.
"This is very disappointing," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "I thought we had tremendous pitching today and we just didn't get the runs for them. We played very well defensively and had chances to win, but just didn't get it done today."
A pair of local pitchers ? Amy Harris (Eugene) and Alicia Cook (Elmira) ? combined to allow just six hits on the day while striking out 11 batters. Cook allowed no walks in the second game while Harris had just two in the first game. Despite their strong performances, Harris (12-10) took the loss in game one and Cook (8-5) recorded the loss in the second game.
In the first game, Oregon threatened in the bottom of the first inning after McGowan walked leadoff hitter Lovena Chaput. Oregon shortstop Breanne Sabol then sacrificed Chaput to second and McGowan walked Beth Boskovich to put runners at first and second. The Beaver defense made the play at third in the next at bat, leaving Boskovich at second and sophomore Kristi Leiter at first. Freshman T.J. Eadus then singled to center field and Boskovich tried to score on the play, but was thrown out at the plate by Beaver center fielder Natalie Johnson.
Oregon had a runner in scoring position again in the third inning, but it was Oregon State that would eventually score first, taking a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single by designated player Vanessa Iapala that scored Mia Longfellow.
It was a pitchers dual for the remainder of the game as there were no extra base hits and Harris allowed the Beavers just one hit in the last four innings of play. McGowan also allowed Oregon just one hit over the last four innings and had a career-high 11 strikeouts in the game.
Strong pitching and defense carried over into the second game as Cook allowed just four hits and struck out six. McGowan (29-4), who set the OSU single season win record with the victory in the second game, relieved starter Amy Klever in the fifth inning and allowed just one hit while striking out two.
An RBI single through the right side by Sherina Galvan that scored Iapala in the second inning of game two gave the Beavers the first lead again.
Oregon scored its first run of the day in the fifth inning to tie the score, 1-1. Freshman Kristi Jorgensen hit an infield single and was later safe at second on a throwing error by Oregon State first baseman Loni Mendoza. A sacrifice by Sabol put Jorgensen at third and Chaput drove her in to account for Oregon's first RBI of the day.
Oregon State pinch hitter Cambria Miranda's short chopper in the top of the seventh inning allowed pinch runner Ta'Tyana McElroy to score the winning run as the Beavers secured the sweep over Oregon for the first time since 2002. It is also the first time under current Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen that the Beavers have won the season series.
The Ducks continue Pac-10 play at home next weekend, hosting Arizona Friday at 3 p.m. and Arizona State Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.)
