Portland Closes Out Match Strong, Sinks Men's Tennis, 4-3
03/23/05 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE ? The struggles continue for the University of Oregon men's tennis team (7-9) as it fell to Portland, 4-3, Wednesday. The Ducks have now lost six in a row heading into Pacific-10 Conference play. Despite the loss, senior Sven Swinnen continues to put together one of the best seasons in Oregon history. The Switzerland native is now 20-3 overall and a perfect 13-0 in dual play.
In doubles, Oregon jumped out quick after Thomas Bieri and Vlad Pino took care of Portland's Joshua Roach and Colby Jager, 8-1. The Pilots then rebounded with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions to claim the doubles point.
Down 2-0 after UO's Manuel Kost fell in straight sets, Oregon fought back and evened the score 2-2 with wins by Arron Spencer and Vlad Pino. Spencer is now 7-5 in dual play, while Pino is second on the team with eight dual victories.
At No. 1 singles, No. 22-ranked Swinnen defeated UP's Matt Loucks, 7-6, 6-0, to put the Ducks up 3-2. Swinnen defeated Loucks in the finals of the ITA Regionals last fall, and has now won 20 of his last 21 matches.
The Pilots, however, regained the lead for good with a three-set victory at the No. 3 position and Jager's match-clinching win over sophomore Eric Pickard, 6-4, 7-6, at No. 6.
The Ducks stay at home at this weekend when they open Pac-10 play against California (Fri., 1:30 p.m.) and No. 10 Stanford (Sat., 1 p.m.). Five of Oregon's seven conference matches will be held at the Student Tennis Center.
