EUGENE ? Despite losing the doubles point for only the second time all season, the University of Oregon women's tennis team (12-2, 1-1) came away with an impressive 5-2 victory over No. 22 BYU at the Student Tennis Center Saturday. The Ducks were swept in doubles play but won five of six singles matches, including two come-from-behind three set matches. Oregon has now won 23 of its last 24 regular season non-conference matches.
"This was one of the most impressive wins I have been a part of since being at Oregon," Duck head coach Nils Schyllander said. "We stumbled a bit in doubles play but it was our singles play that stepped up for us. To win five out of six singles matches against a team of BYU's caliber is a testament to how hard this team has worked. BYU has beaten some great teams. It was a great win for our program."
With BYU up 1-0, the Ducks played some of their best singles play of the season, posting two quick wins with Anna Leksinska and Ester Bak at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions respectively.
Senior Davina Mendiburu and sophomore Dominika Dieskova both lost their first sets but rebounded in convincing fashion in the second and third sets to post victories. Dieskova is now a team-leading 17-7 overall. Mendiburu is 9-5 in duals.
Daria Panova improved to 11-2 in dual play with a 6-2, 7-6 victory over the Cougars' Lauren Jones.
Freshman Anna Powaska got her first action as a Duck. Powaska, a native of Poland, became eligible to play for the spring term. Powaska was the lone Duck to fall in singles play, losing to BYU's Anastasia Sourkova, 6-1, 6-3.
"We asked a lot of Anna (Powaska) to step right in play," Schyllander said. "She is going to be a great player for us."
Oregon continues Pac-10 play on Tuesday when it travels to Seattle to take on nationally ranked Washington at noon.
