Softball Shutout 1-0
03/19/05 | Softball
SAN DIEGO, Calif. ? Despite another gem by Oregon pitcher Amy Harris, the University of Oregon softball team came up just short, falling 1-0 to UC Santa Barbara at the San Diego State Tournament Saturday morning. With the win, the Gouchos improve to 11-9 overall and 2-1 at the tournament while the Ducks fell to 13-9 overall and 2-1 in tournament play.
Harris struck out seven batters, but fell to 7-4 with the loss while Goucho starter Jennifer Davis allowed just two hits and struck out eight batters to improve to 7-4 on the season.
"This is very a very difficult loss," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "I thought our defense and our pitching was again tremendous, but offensively we just couldn't get the one timely hit."
Harris battled Davis through five innings as neither pitcher allowed a hit. The Ducks threatened in the top of the fifth after Davis walked Beth Boskovich to lead off the inning and junior Dani Baird reached on a throwing error by Santa Barbara first baseman Lindsey Herrin, which advanced Boskovich to third on the play. But Davis and the Goucho defense rallied after an Oregon strikeout and a double play to get out of the jam.
Santa Barbara went three up three down in the bottom of the fifth as both pitchers kept their no-hitters in tact through five innings. In the sixth, Oregon sophomore Kayleen Hudson got the first hit of the game ? a triple to right center field ? but Davis retired the next three batters to prevent the go-ahead run from scoring.
Goucho leadoff hitter Brittany Putich responded in the bottom of the sixth accounting for Santa Barbara's first hit of the game. Shelly Hensler followed with an infield single, but Putich was out at third on the play and Hensler advanced to second on the out. Davis then helped her cause, driving in Hensler with an RBI single to shallow left field that proved to be the winning run.
The Ducks continue tournament play tonight, facing Towson at 5 p.m.
