Softball Wraps SDSU Tourney With Shutout Over Aztecs

SAN DIEGO, Calif. ? Oregon pitcher Amy Harris capped a stellar weekend by shutting out San Diego State, 2-0, at the SDSU Tournament Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Ducks complete the tournament 5-1 and improve to 16-9 overall this season while the Aztecs fell to 22-12 overall.
"I thought we had an exceptional weekend in terms of our pitching and defense," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "And offensively we came up with timely hits and did what we needed to do to be successful."
In five appearances this weekend, Harris (Eugene) was 3-1 with a save and 35 strikeouts while allowing just one run to score.
Offensively against the Aztecs, six different players recorded hit, including three doubles and a triple. Senior Ashley Richards led the way, going 2-for-2 with two doubles and a run scored.
Oregon pushed the first run of the game across in the top of the first inning when freshman Lovena Chaput scored on an error by San Diego State shortstop Chrissie Markham to put the Ducks ahead 1-0.
A pair of back-to-back doubles by Richards and second baseman Erin Goodell in the fourth inning extended Oregon's lead to 2-0. San Diego State threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning, loading the bases after an Oregon error, a single by Erin Mahoney and a walk to catcher Megan McDonald, but Harris forced Kristen Carranza to pop out to second base to get out of the jam.
The Ducks return home next week, hosting Nevada in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Friday and BYU in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday.
