Harris Shines In San Diego Sweep
03/18/05 | Softball
SAN DIEGO, Calif. ? Junior pitcher Amy Harris struck out 19 batters and allowed just three hits in two games Friday afternoon to lead the Ducks to a pair of wins at the San Diego State Tournament. In game one, Harris struck out nine batters in relief and freshman T.J. Eadus hit a two-run home run to lead Oregon to a 4-2 win over Longwood University. In the second game, Harris added 10strikeouts and allowed just one hit as the Ducks defeated Georgia Southern 3-0 to complete the sweep.
With the two wins, Harris (Eugene) improves to 7-3 overall this season and has not allowed an earned run in 36 and one thirds innings pitched. As a team, Oregon improved to 13-8 overall this season and has won four straight. With a hit in both games, Eadus has hit safely in nine consecutive games and is hitting .524 (11-for-21) during that stretch.
"I am extremely pleased with how we played today," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "Our pitching and defense was outstanding and I really thought our offense came to life as well. We need to build on this and continue to play with the same focus again tomorrow."
In the opener, Eadus hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to lift the Ducks to the win over Longwood University (13-12) after Oregon had trailed 2-1 heading into the inning. Oregon's offense caught fire as the Ducks tied the game earlier in the inning on an RBI single by Suzie Barnes. Eadus' homer gave the Ducks their first and final lead and as a team Oregon had four hits in the inning.
Longwood shortstop Ryan Washington led off the game with a solo home run over the left field fence to give the Lancers an early 1-0 lead. They extended the lead to 2-0 in the third inning when Washington doubled to score right fielder Becca Walker.
The Ducks pulled within 2-1 in the bottom of the third after back-to-back singles by Lovena Chaput and Barnes. Eadus followed with an RBI line drive to score Chaput and continue her hit streak. Eadus finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI while Barnes went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
It was Oregon that took the early lead over Georgia Southern in the second game after a squeeze bunt by Erin Goodell scored Kristi Leiter in the second inning to put Oregon ahead 1-0. Sabol followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Kayleen Hudson and extend the lead to 2-0.
Oregon added a run in the sixth on an RBI by Beth Boskovich and as a team, the Ducks finished the two games with 18 hits.
The Ducks resume tournament play tomorrow vs. UC Santa Barbara at 9 a.m.
