Cook's Two-Hitter Advances Oregon In Silver Medal Bracket At NFCA Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. ? Freshman pitcher Alicia Cook tossed a two-hitter to lead the Ducks to a 3-1 victory over San Diego State at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga., Saturday evening. Oregon advances in the silver medal bracket and will face South Carolina Sunday morning at 8 a.m. PST.
Cook struck out seven batters and walked two to improve to 4-2 overall this season. Aztec pitcher Cori Janelli fell to 5-4 on the season with the loss.
Offensively, freshman Kristi Jorgensen led Oregon, finishing the game 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Fellow freshman Lovena Chaput was 1-for-3 with an RBI and hit her sixth double of the season. Chaput currently leads the team in doubles and has doubled in Oregon's last three games.
"I'm very pleased with how we came out tonight," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We continued to get timely hits and had a great pitching peformance by Alicia Cook. Now we need to carry that over to tomorrow."
Senior catcher Ashley Richards drove in sophomore Kristi Leiter with a single through the left side to put Oregon ahead 1-0 in the fourth inning and Jorgensen hit a two-out RBI double later in the inning to score Richards and extend the Ducks' lead to 2-0.
The Aztecs cut the lead in half in the fifth inning after an RBI single by pinch hitter Megan McDonald that scored Tamani Wells, who was running for catcher Danielle Touhey.
Chaput added to Oregon's lead, scoring Jorgensen in the seventh inning to put the Ducks up 3-1.
