02/19/05 | Men's Tennis
EVANSTON, Ill. ? A day after defeating Minnesota, the Ducks finished their road trip with a split, falling to Northwestern, 6-1, Saturday. For the third match this season, senior Sven Swinnen provided Oregon (7-4) with its lone point, while improving to 10-0 in dual play.
In doubles, the Ducks lost all three matches. Of the teams' seven victories this season, Oregon as won the doubles point in each, while failing to do so in all four losses.
Junior Arron Spencer went three sets for the second time in as many chances, this time falling to Northwestern's Christian Tempke, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6. Thomas Bieri and Chad Wilson were asked to play out of position due to injuries and fell at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions respectively.
At the No. 1 position, Swinnen won his 17th match of the season, defeating NU's No. 114 Tommy Hanus in straight sets. Dating back to the fall, No. 16-ranked Swinnen has won 16 of his last 17 matches, including 10 straight. Of those 16 wins, five are against nationally ranked players.
"I don't think the score was a good indication of how close this match was," first-year Oregon head coach Kevin Kowalik said. "Each guy played with a lot of guts. It would of been nice to have had a full lineup, but I was pleased with how the road trip went. We are now starting to play some solid tennis."
The Ducks continue on the road next weekend when they travel to Seattle to take on Texas Tech (Sat., 3 p.m) and No. 16 Washington (Sun., 2 p.m.).
