Softball Dominates No. 3 California; Wins 4-0 To Improve To 2-0 In Pac-10
04/02/04 | Softball
BERKELEY, Calif. ? It's been four years since the University of Oregon softball team took down the California Bears on their home field. On Friday, the 15th-ranked Ducks ended that streak with a 4-0 shutout of the No. 3 Bears in a game that included another stellar pitching performance and a dominating offensive attack. With the win, Oregon improves to 28-8 overall, 2-0 Pac-10. The Ducks are 2-0 to start the conference for the first time since 1994 and snapped California's 11-game win streak.
"This is a huge win for our team," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "To come on the road and be able to get a conference win against a very good team is a tremendous accomplishment. I am extremely pleased with our pitching performance as well as how we hit the ball."
Junior pitcher Ani Nyhus (13-4) threw her third consecutive complete game shutout and has not allowed a run in 28.2 consecutive innings pitched. She scattered four hits in the game and struck out eight batters. No California batter advanced passed first base until the sixth inning and Nyhus walked just one batter, her first in 13.2 innings pitched.
Cal pitcher Kelli Anderson (18-5) took the loss for the Bears, who fell to 32-4 overall, 0-1 Pac-10.
Oregon's offense complemented Nyhus' performance as the Ducks had two doubles and a home run in the game. Second baseman Erin Goodell and left fielder Dani Baird were 2-for-2 each while sophomore Beth Boskovich finished 2-for-4.
Catcher Jenn Poore hit her sixth home run of the season to lead off the seventh inning and is now one home run away from breaking into the top-10 all-time at Oregon.
The Ducks put the squeeze on in the third inning after Goodell walked to lead off the inning and freshman Suzie Barnes singled hard down the right field line. Poore was then out at first, but advanced the runners to second and third and sophomore Breanne Sabol scored Goodell with a perfect bunt to put Oregon ahead 1-0.
Oregon added a run in the top of the fourth after Baird led off with a single down the right line and later scored on an RBI single by Goodell.
A second squeeze by Baird in the sixth inning scored Beth Boskovich to extend Oregon's lead to 3-0 and Poore added a run in the sixth with her home run over the left field fence.
Cal's first hit came in the third and they followed with a hit in the fourth and fifth, but after each Cal runner reached base, the Duck defense responded with a double play as Oregon had a season-high three double plays in the game.
The Bears threatened in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases after a walk, a hit and an error, but Nyhus forced a groundout by cleanup hitter Haley Woods.
The Ducks face No. 11 Stanford tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Palo Alto, Calif.
