Softball Shuts Down Stanford
04/03/04 | Softball
STANFORD, Calif. ? The 15th-ranked University of Oregon softball team continued to shutout the competition, this time defeating No. 11 Stanford, 1-0, in Stanford, Calif., Saturday afternoon. Junior pitcher Ani Nyhus won her fourth consecutive game by shutout, tossing a one-hitter and facing the minimum number of batters (21) for the second time this season. With the win, Oregon improves to 29-8 overall, 3-0 Pacific-10 Conference while Stanford fell to 28-8, 1-1.
The Ducks are 3-0 for in conference for the first time since 1989. Oregon has not allowed a run to an opponent in its last three games ? wins over Portland State, No. 3 California and today's win over the Cardinal. "We are really hitting our stride at the right time," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We come ready to play and very focused on winning and I'm extremely proud of this team for how they come ready to play." Nyhus has pitched 35 and two thirds scoreless innings, last allowing a run to score on March 24 and has struck out 29 in three appearances this week. Stanford right fielder Katherine Hoffman had the lone hit for the Cardinal, but was picked off by Oregon catcher Jenn Poore while trying to steal second. After Hoffman's hit, Nyhus did not allow another runner to reach base, retiring 19 straight batters. "I'm just feeling really confident in my pitches and in our defense," Nyhus said. "We made some really key plays today and it's been great having them behind me. I feel confident in our team and what we can accomplish when we play together. A solo home run by freshman Kristi Leiter ? her second of the season ? in the second inning put Oregon ahead 1-0 and it was all the Ducks needed as Nyhus and the Oregon defense kept Stanford's offense in check for the remainder of the game. Second baseman Erin Goodell's two diving plays in the bottom of the fifth inning kept the Carndinal off the base paths, securing the Ducks' lead through five innings. Offensively, Goodell was 1-for-1 with a sacrifice and a walk after going 2-for-2 vs. California Friday. Sophomore Beth Boskovich, who celebrated her 20th birthday Saturday, was 2-for-3. The Ducks return to Smith Family Stadium tomorrow to face Stanford at 1 p.m. Oregon 010 000 0 - 1 6 0 Win: Nyhus (14-4); Loss: Severson (10-4) __________________________________________________________
