Softball Continues To Roll In Pac-10; Defeats No. 3 UCLA
04/17/04 | Softball
LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? Four first inning runs were all the No. 14 University of Oregon softball team needed to defeat the third-ranked UCLA Bruins, 4-3, at Easton Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif., Saturday afternoon. The win is Oregon's first at Easton Stadium since 1999 and combined with its win over No. 5 Washington yesterday, this weekend marks the first time since 1998 that the Ducks (32-10 overall, 6-2 Pac-10) have beaten Washington and UCLA in back-to-back games.
Junior pitcher Ani Nyhus picked up her sixth conference victory over the defending national champions en route to improving to 17-6 this season. All-American pitcher Keira Goerl (16-4) gave up four runs on eight hits in the loss. "What a great win for this team," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We were able to put runs on the board early and our defense made them hold up. I thought we did a great job picking up a win on the road against a very good ball club."
Oregon's offense caught fire early as the Ducks took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after an RBI single by Ashley Richards scored catcher Jenn Poore, who led off the inning with a walk. Sophomore Beth Boskovich followed with a double deep to right center field to score Richards. Senior Julie Jaime added to the lead with a single through the left side to score Boskovich and junior Erin Goodell extended the lead to 4-0 with an RBI blooper to center field. UCLA threatened in the bottom of the inning after back-to-back two-out singles by Stephanie Ramos and Claire Sua, but Nyhus struck out shortstop Jodie Legaspi to end the inning without allowing a run to score. The Bruins eventually chipped away at the lead after a two-run home run by freshman second baseman Lisa Dodd in the second inning pulled them within, 4-2. Nyhus and the Ducks' defense kept UCLA's offense in check until the bottom of the fifth inning when Caitlin Benyi hit a two-out solo home run to pull within a run, but the Bruins never got closer.
