No. 3 UCLA Narrowly Avoids Sweep By Oregon Softball
04/18/04 | Softball
LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? UCLA sophomore Caitlin Benyi hit a walk off home run to lift the third-ranked Bruins to a 3-2, 10 inning win over No. 14 Oregon and avoid a sweep by the Ducks for the first time in school history. With the win, UCLA improves to 29-6 overall, 2-5 Pac-10 while Oregon fell to 32-11, 6-3.
"Our kids never gave up and battled inning after inning," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We had a great defensive game and were able to battle back in the fifth, but we came up just short." In the end ? after both teams had used two pitchers ? Oregon junior Ani Nyhus and UCLA senior All-American Keira Goerl were left to battle it out one day after Nyhus and the Ducks defeated Goerl, 4-3. On Sunday, Benyi's clutch home run lifted Goerl (17-4) to the win. Oregon second baseman Erin Goodell hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game just two days after hitting the game-winning home run at No. 5 Washington. Goodell's two weekend home runs are her first of the season and seventh of her career. The junior from Roseburg was also a part of a season-high three double plays for the Ducks in the game. Designated player Kristen Dedmon hit an RBI single to left center, scoring pinch runner Amanda Simpson to give UCLA the first lead of the game, 1-0, in the second inning. An RBI double by catcher Emily Zaplatosch scored first baseman Claire Sua in the fourth inning to extend the Bruins' lead to 2-0. Stephanie Ramos led off the eighth inning with a double to deep center field and UCLA had runners at first and second after Nyhus intentionally walked Sua. Ramos was picked off at second after taking a big lead and losing her footing in the base path, failing to get back and accounting for the first out of the inning. Shortstop Jodie Legaspi and Zaplatosch both flied out as the Duck defense got out of another inning, but UCLA eventually scored the winning run in the tenth. Oregon returns home to host Arizona and Arizona State next weekend.
