Men's Tennis Drop Conference Opener to Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. ? The University of Oregon men's tennis )8-5, 0-1) team continued their struggles against the California Bears, losing its Pac-10 Conference opener, 5-2. The loss marked the 19th defeat in a row to Cal.
Cal earned the doubles point after winning two of three matches. Manuel Kost and Thomas Bieri lost for only the fifth time this season, losing to Cal's Balazs Veress and Patrick Briaud, 8-6.
At position No. 2, Sven Swinnen and Arron Spencer defeated by Tyler Browne and Kuni Minato, 8-3. The loss pushes the duo's record to 11-1 in duals. Chris King and Markus Schiller were defeated at position No. 3, 8-5.
In singles, the Ducks won two of six matches. The No. 38-ranked Swinnen defeated Veress, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. Swinnen is now 17-5 overall on the season.
Cal's No. 84-ranked Wayne Wong took down Kost, 7-6, 6-4, while Bieri was upended, 6-4, 6-0, by Browne at the No. 3 spot.
Schiller picked up his 10th win of the season, taking down Jake Leivent in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, at the No. 4 position.
Positions No. 5 and No. 6 belonged to Cal, as Arron Spencer and King were defeated in two sets.
The Ducks resume action tomorrow (Sat., March 27, Noon) when they travel across the Bay to take on No. 10-ranked Stanford. The match can be followed via live scoring on www.gostanford.com.
