Men's Tennis Wins I-5 Showdown

PORTLAND ? The University of Oregon men's tennis team took care of the Portland Pilots, 6-1, in a warmup match before traveling to the Bay Area this weekend to begin Pac-10 Conference play.
The Ducks (8-4, 0-0) swept all three doubles matches. At the No. 1 position, junior Sven Swinnen and sophomore Arron Spencer won their team-leading 11th dual match of the year, defeating the Pilots' Roman Borvanov and Quinn Borchard, 8-6.
At the No. 2 position, junior Manuel Kost and sophomore Thomas Bieri took care of James Redpath and Thabani Sithole, 9-7. At the No. 3 position, senior Chris King and sophomore Markus Schiller defeated Colby Jager and Peter Miskovic, 8-2.
In singles, the Ducks took five out of six matches. No. 81-ranked Manuel Kost cruised past Roman Borvanov, 6-4, 6-3. Kost improves his record to 13-6 overall on the season. At the No. 2 position, No. 38-ranked Sven Swinnen upended UP's James Redpath, 6-4, 7-6. Swinnen leads the team with 11 dual wins.
Bieri defeated Borchard in No. 3 play, 7-5, 6-1, while Schiller disposed of Miskovic in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, at the No. 4 spot.
Back in action was King, who defeated Sithole, 6-7, 6-3, (10-7), at the No. 6 position. The lone loss for the Ducks' was Spencer, who lost a tough three-set match to Jager, 1-6, 6-1, (11-9).
The Ducks head straight to the Bay Area where they will open Pac-10 Conference play with No. 29 California (Fri., March 26, 1:30 p.m.) and No. 10 Stanford (Sat., March 27, Noon...the match will have live scoring on www.gostanford.com). The Pac-10 currently boasts five teams in the top 25...five of which are in the top 10.
