No. 16 Softball Rallies To Split Doubleheader
03/21/04 | Softball
EUGENE, Ore. ? Oregon freshman Kayleen Hudson had two clutch RBI singles to lead the 16th-ranked University of Oregon softball team to a 4-3 victory over Missouri in the second game of a doubleheader in front of 635 fans at Howe Field Sunday afternoon. The Ducks fell 8-0 in six innings in the first game and are now 21-7 overall this season while the Tigers went to 11-16.
Hudson drove in Beth Boskovich with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game, 3-3. In the ninth inning, it was much of the same for Hudson as she again drove in Boskovich for the winning run. Hudson was 3-for-5 in the second game and now has 15 RBI on the season. "What a tremendous showing by a freshman," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "After losing in the first game and falling behind in the second, I thought it showed a lot of courage and poise for us to continue fighting through." Senior Anissa Meashintubby (8-1) didn't allow a hit in four innings pitched to pick up the win in the second game while Nyhus (9-4) took the loss in the first game. Missouri pitcher Erin Kalka split the game to improve to 6-9 on the year. Oregon took the early lead in the second game after a solo home run by Ashley Richards in the first inning, but fell behind in the third inning after Missouri scored an unearned run and later went ahead when Heather Kunkel drove in Leanne Bowers with a single up the middle. Duck senior Julie Jaime hit a timely double to right center to score freshman Suzie Barnes and tie the game, 2-2. Barnes was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two walks on the day while Jaime was 1-for-3 with an RBI in the win. Missouri again capitalized on an Oregon error in the sixth inning, scoring an unearned run to reclaim the lead, 3-2, but the Ducks responded in the seventh to force their first extra inning game of the season. The Tigers went ahead early in the first game after a two-run home run by Samantha Fleeman and extended their lead to 5-0 in the third with a three-run home run by A.J. White that scored Joanne Loethen and Leanne Bowers. Bowers later hit Missouri's third home run of the game, a two-run shot that scored Loethen to put the Tigers ahead 7-0 in the fifth inning. Three Oregon errors in the sixth inning led to another run for Missouri as they went on to win 8-0 after six complete innings. The Ducks continue their homestead next week, hosting Kansas on Tuesday and Wednesday at Howe Field.
