Softball Sweeps On Final Day Of UNLV Tournament

LAS VEGAS, Nev. ? The University of Oregon softball team picked up its 20th win of the season Saturday, defeating host UNLV 2-1 before crushing Long Island University, 9-1 in five innings, in its final game at the UNLV Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev.
Junior Ani Nyhus (9-3) struck out eight batters and walked none to pick up the win vs. UNLV while Anissa Meashintubby struck out three and walked one to claim the victory over Long Island.
"We are starting to rebuild some of the momentum we had earlier and I'm very pleased with how played this weekend."
Sophomore Beth Boskovich was 2-for-3 with a double and a home run against Long Island and as a team, Oregon had 12 hits, including four doubles, a triple and two home runs. Catcher Jenn Poore was 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored while Ann Marie Topps was 2-for-3 with a single and a home run.
In the opener, Oregon freshman Kayleen Hudson hit her third home run of the tournament and fourth of the season in the sixth inning to tie the game, 1-1. In the seventh, third baseman Ashley Richards doubled and sophomore Beth Boskovich drove her in with a double to right center for the winning run.
Despite taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning after an RBI by first baseman Kacey Ellis, UNLV was unable to score again. The Rebels had three hits in the first inning and scattered just two more in the remaining innings.
In their final game of the tournament, Oregon gave Long Island University a 1-0 lead after a throwing error allowed shortstop Krystal Mejia to score in the top of the second inning.
Boskovich belted a two-run home run in the third inning to put Oregon ahead, 2-1. Junior Erin Goodell then reached on an error, advancing to third on the play, in the fourth inning and Julie Jaime put down a bunt to score Goodell on the squeeze play and extend Oregon's lead to 3-1. Poore then hit her first triple of the season and Breanne Sabol drove her in with a hard-shot single to left field. Richards continued Oregon's rally with a double to deep left field to score Sabol and Boskovich drove in Richards with a double to right field and Oregon led 6-1 after four innings.
The Ducks added three runs in the fifth to end the game.
