No. 16 Ducks Down Dolphins; Falls To Southern Utah On Day One Of UNLV Tournament
03/12/04 | Softball
LAS VEGAS, Nev. ? The 16th-ranked University of Oregon softball team split on day one of the UNLV mini-tournament, using a heavy dose of offense to defeat Jacksonville, 8-1, after falling, 4-3, to Southern Utah in the tournament opener in Las Vegas, Nev., Friday. Oregon is now 18-6 overall this season while Southern Utah dropped to 10-6 and Jacksonville fell to 8-19.
Oregon junior Ashley Richards hit three home runs on the day ? one vs. Southern Utah and two vs. Jacksonville while freshman Kayleen Hudson belted two home runs against Jacksonville. Richards finished the day 3-for-6 (.500) with three runs scored four RBI and two walks. Oregon junior Ani Nyhus (8-3) gave up just one hit in five innings pitched to pick up the win against the Dolphins after taking the loss vs. Southern Utah.
"I thought we responded well in the second game after not being able to come up with key hits in the morning," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We came back with a desire to win and picked up our offense, defense and pitching."
With one out in the fourth inning, Oregon's offense exploded against Jacksonville as the Ducks hit a triple (Beth Boskovich) and two home runs (Richards, Hudson) to take their first lead of the game, 3-0. Prior to the fourth, Jacksonville pitcher Stacey Bell had held Oregon hitless. Following the three runs on three consecutive hits, Bell was replaced by freshman Katie Buell.
Richards led off sixth inning with her third home run of the day before Buell walked Boskovich and Hudson in consecutive at-bats. Dani Baird then reached on an error by Jacksonville second baseman Stepanie Beasley with Boskovich scoring on the play to put the Ducks ahead 5-0. Buell then walked pinch hitter Ann Marie Topps to load the bases and Hudson later scored when Julie Jaime was thrown out at first base.
Jacksonville senior Sonja Cadarette drove in Dianna Korcak with two outs in the sixth inning to account for the Dolphins only score.
Oregon responded in the seventh inning when Hudson hit her second home run ? a two-run shot that scored Boskovich ? to extend the Ducks' lead to 8-1.
In the opener, Richards hit a two-run home run in the first inning to give Oregon a 2-0 lead early. With one out in the second, Hudson walked and later advanced on a passed ball. Freshman Kristi Leiter then drove in Hudson with a single to center field and Oregon led 3-0 after two complete innings.
The Thunderbirds pulled within 3-1 in the fifth inning after Anna Leeman drove in Jessica Heineman with her second double of the game. A bases loaded walk later in the inning scored Desiree Guterrez and Southern Utah tied the game after Kristen Carmicheal was hit by an Ani Nyhus pitch, which scored Leeman.
Capitalizing on an Oregon error in the sixth, Southern Utah pinch runner Bobbi Jo Merrill scored from second base to lead the Thunderbirds to a 4-3 win.
Oregon returns to tournament action tomorrow morning, taking on host UNLV at 10 a.m. followed by Long Island University at 12:30 p.m.
