Chaney Too Much For Ducks as Beavers Win 75-61

CORVALLIS, Ore. ? It wasn't meant to be for the University of Oregon women's basketball team Saturday. The Ducks were in a double-digit hole in the game's first four minutes while Oregon State's Brina Chaney was unstoppable, scoring a career-high 31 points as the Beavers won 75-61 before a season-high 4,763 fans at Gill Coliseum.
“She had a great game,” Oregon coach Bev Smith said. “It was a very good performance by her.”
Chaney, a 6-foot-5 senior, hit 8-of-13 from the floor and tied a Pac-10 record by making 15-of-15 from the foul line to go with a game-high eight rebounds.
Oregon State (12-9, 6-6) earned a split with Oregon (11-11, 3-9) for the third straight year.
“You have to credit Oregon State's defense,” Smith said. “One of the reasons we didn't get those open looks is that we didn't move the ball. Our offensive flow and execution was much better in the second half at the beginning, but you have to make defensive stops.”
The Ducks, who never led in the game, made their first basket with 15:39 left in the first half as they trailed 10-2. The Beavers stretched their lead to 33-16 with 3:38 remaining, but a lay-up and a 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds on the clock kept Oregon to within striking distance at halftime, 33-21.
Oregon cut Oregon State's lead to nine at the 16:44 and 16:07 marks in the second half, but would get no closer.
“We chipped away at the end,” Smith said. “We're going to keep learning this lesson until we get it right. They really did attack us inside. We went to our alternate zone (2-3) and we weren't working as hard or as aggressive as we should have been.”
“Bottom line is we didn't do anything to stop Chaney,” Oregon point guard Corrie Mizusawa said. “She was able to do whatever she wanted in the post. She had a dominant game tonight.”
Mizusawa, who had nine points and six assists, moved to fifth place all-time on Oregon's single-season assists list with 146, surpassing Smith and Lauri Landerholm.
Davis led the Ducks with 13 points, but made just 5-of-15 from the field. Her three 3-pointers (in six attempts) gave Davis 87 for her career ? sixth in the school's career record book.
Eleanor Haring added 12 points for Oregon ? her sixth straight double-digit scoring game ? on 5-of-11 shooting. Junior center Andrea Bills added 10 points for the Ducks.
Shannon Howell had 14 points for the Beavers while Krystal Turner chipped in 10. Oregon State made 25-of-28 free throws. The Ducks actually outshot the Beavers 43.1 to 42.6 percent.
After three straight road games, Oregon now returns home to play host Thursday to Washington State at 7 p.m. and Saturday to Washington. The Ducks and Huskies tip off at 2 p.m. in a game nationally televised on Fox Sports Net.
