Women's Tennis Struggles Against No. 7 Cal
BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 24 Oregon women's tennis squad (9-3, 2-2) were defeated by the No. 9 Cal Bears, 7-0, at the Hellman Teniss Complex on Saturday. Oregon failed to grab any momentum, losing all three doubles and all six singles matches to the Bears.
In singles, No. 2-ranked Raquel Kops-Jones defeated Oregon's No. 7 Daria Panova, 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 1 position. Panova dropped her second straight match, something she hasn't done since April of 2003. Cal's No. 79 Jieun Jacobs took down Oregon freshman, No. 46 Dominika Dieskova, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 2 play.
In the closest match of the day, Cal's Catherine Lynch squeaked by senior Courtney Nagle, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (8). The Bears took care of the No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 positions as well.
"We made a ton of mistakes today," said Oregon head coach Nils Schyllander. "We needed to play with a more of a sense of urgency. This was a winnable match if we showed up to play."
The Ducks hit the road again next weekend when they travel to Los Angeles, Calif. to take on No. 12 USC (Mar. 5, 1:30 p.m.) and No. 8 UCLA (Mar. 6, Noon).
