Clutch Freshmen Lift No. 21 Softball Past No. 14 Fresno State

POWAY, Calif. ? Oregon freshman Kayleen Hudson drove in fellow classmate Ann Marie Topps in the top of the seventh inning to lift the 21st-ranked softball team to a 1-0 win over No. 14 Fresno State at the Campbell/Cartier Classic in Poway, Calif., Friday evening. Oregon has won four consecutive games to improve to 7-4 overall this season with pitcher Ani Nyhus improving to 5-2. The Ducks handed Fresno State junior Jamie Southern (3-1) her first loss of the year.
"This is a huge win for us," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We were able to put together a tremendous pitching effort and got some key hits when we needed them. The biggest thing is winning back-to-back games on the same day. It's great to finally get over that hump. I thought this was a very positive day for our team."
Topps led Oregon's offense with a 2-for-3 performance while Hudson and catcher Jenn Poore accounted for Oregon's only other hits. Nyhus struck out six batters en route to picking up her second shutout of the season.
"I felt really confident tonight because my defense was really behind me," Nyhus said. "They made huge plays all game and our offense stepped up in the seventh inning and I just wanted to win the game for us. I didn't want to let anyone get on base or let them take the momentum from us."
Nyhus and Southern battled throughout the game as neither team scored through six innings. With one out in the seventh, Topps doubled to center field and advanced to third when Suzie Barnes was thrown out at first. Hudson followed with a hard shot down the left field line and drove in Topps with what proved to be the winning run.
