
Softball Downs Hawaii, Wins Third Straight

POWAY, Calif. ? The 21st ranked University of Oregon softball team won its third consecutive game, defeating Hawaii, 4-2, on the first day of the Campbell/Cartier Classic in Poway, Calif. With the win, Oregon improves to 6-4 overall this season while Hawaii falls to 5-8.
The Ducks had nine hits in the game while senior pitcher Anissa Measintubby improved to 2-1 on season.
"We're starting to put together back to back wins and I'm very pleased about that," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "The big key is to come back against a good Fresno State team and continue to build momentum. We have to continue to get better and improve with each game."
The Ducks struck early, loading the bases in the first inning and scoring their first run on a sacrifice fly by Ann Marie Topps. Hawaii responded in the bottom of the inning, tying the game on an a sacrifice bunt by April Crowell.
Oregon freshman Suzie Barnes, who finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base, drove in Beth Boskovich with a single up the middle in the fourth inning and catcher Jenn Poore put the Ducks ahead 3-1 in the fifth inning with a solo home run. Poore finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and currently leads the team with a .387 average.
Sophomore Breanne Sabol hit an RBI single through the left side in the top of the sixth inning, scoring second baseman Erin Goodell to put Oregon ahead 4-2. The Ducks added a run in the seventh when Barnes scored on a bunt by Dani Baird.
Oregon faces No. 14 Fresno State tonight at 5:30 p.m.
