PHOENIX - The No. 20 Oregon defeated No. 10 Texas, 4-1, in softball action on Sunday afternoon in final-day action at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix. After starting almost an hour-and-a-half late, the game was called after five innings as Oregon had to leave the park to meet prior travel arrangements.
With the win, Oregon improves to 5-4 overall, while Texas fell to 6-4 overall.
"This was a good win for us," said head coach Kathy Arendsen. "Our pitching was strong and our offense stepped up and gave Ani (Nyhus) the support she needed."
The Ducks jumped on the scoreboard first, pushing across two runs in the top of the second. With two outs, Erin Goodell doubled to left center to drive in a run before Kayleen Hudson scored off a failed pick-off attempt.
Oregon added two more runs in the top of the third as Beth Boskovich hit a home run to straight-away center field that also brought in Ashley Richards.
The Longhorns chipped into the lead in the bottom of the third when sophomore center fielder Tina Boutelle (Katy, Texas) knocked a slapper home run over the center field fence.
Texas threatened in both the bottom of the fourth and fifth, with two runners on in each inning, but the Longhorns were unable to bring them in.
For Texas, freshman Christina Gwyn (Keller, Texas) started the game and went 2.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits. She struck out one and walked two. Junior Amy Bradford (Lufkin, Texas) entered in relief, finishing the final 2.2 innings, allowing one run on one hit.
Oregon's Ani Nyhus went the distance for the Ducks, allowing one run on six hits. She struck out three and walked two in the complete game.
The Ducks will hit the road next weekend playing in the Campbell-Cartier Classic in San Diego. They open up with Hawaii on Friday at 10:00am PT.
