Softball Defeats Northridge 6-1 To Split Day Two Of Fiesta Bowl Tournament
02/14/04 | Softball
PHOENIX, Ariz. ? The 20th-ranked University of Oregon softball team found its offense in the nightcap of a doubleheader Saturday evening, defeating Cal State Northridge 6-1 after falling 3-1 to Ohio State in its opening game of the day at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament in Tempe, Ariz. The Ducks are now 4-4 this season and 2-2 at the tournament.
"I thought we responded well against Northridge after missing quite a few opportunities against Ohio State," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We needed to find a spark to complement our pitching a defense and we did a nice job of that."
Catcher Jenn Poore led Oregon's offense in the two games, finishing the day 5-for-8 (.625) while junior Ashley Richards was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run against Northridge. Sophomore Dani Baird drove in three runs on the day and hit her second double of the tournament. Senior pitcher Anissa Meashintubby picked up the win against the Matadors.
In the win against Northridge, Richards hit her second home run in as many days to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning and the Ducks extended their lead after Ann Marie Topps scored on a wild pitch by Jenny Wheeler. Richards started another scoring rally in the sixth inning, leading off with a double and later scoring on an RBI single by Poore. Freshman Kristi Leiter singled up the middle to score Poore and Baird doubled to deep center field, to put the Ducks comfortably ahead 6-0.
Northridge eventually scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI by designated player Monique Lovell.
Ohio State left fielder Megan Schwab hit a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to lead the Buckeyes to a 3-1 win over the Ducks in their first game of the day. Oregon freshman Amy Harris picked up her first loss of the season to fall to 0-1 while Ohio State freshman Jamee Juarez improved to 2-0 on the season.
Poore was 3-for-4 in the game while freshman Suzie Barnes finished the game 2-for-4.
Freshman Ann Marie Topps scored on a critical throwing error by Buckeye shortstop Jennifer Johnson to finally get the Ducks on the board, 1-0, in the sixth inning. Topps had walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice by second baseman Erin Goodell. Johnson then tried to get Topps out on the force at third and threw the ball away, allowing Topps to score.
Oregon pitcher Ani Nyhus and Ohio State pitcher Jamee Juarez battled through five innings as the scored remained 0-0 with Nyhus allowing just one hit in the first five frames. The Ducks had five hits during that span, but also left eight runners on base.
The Ducks wrap up play at the tournament Sunday, facing No. 10 Texas at 11 a.m. PST. The Longhorns are 1-3 in the tournament, defeating Ohio Sate and falling to Fullerton, Washington and Arizona.
