Softball Splits On Day One Of Fiesta Bowl Tournament

PHOENIX, Ariz. ? Oregon junior Ashley Richards was 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, but it wasn't enough to fend off 15th-ranked Texas A&M as the Aggies scored eight runs on 10 hits to defeat No. 20 Oregon, 8-3, at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz., Friday afternoon. The Ducks finished the day 1-1 after a 10-1 win over No. 13 Fullerton in the opener and are now 3-3 overall this season while Texas A&M improves to 4-0.
"I thought we had a lot of missed opportunities in this game," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "We left a lot of people on base and defensively I didn't think we were as strong as we can be. But, I'm pleased with the fact that we kept battling. We just didn't get some timely hits."
Richards finished the day 5-for-8 (.625) with a home run, a double, four RBI and three runs scored while catcher Jenn Poore was 3-for-5 (600) with two runs scored. Junior Ani Nyhus is 3-1 on the season, defeating Fullerton before dropping the decision to Texas A&M.
The Aggies went ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Adrian Gregory that scored center fielder Sharonda McDonanld and the Ducks tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning when Beth Boskovich led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Kayleen Hudson. Boskovich later scored on a passed ball by Aggie catcher Kristen Gunter.
Gregory gave Texas A&M a 3-1 lead in the third inning, driving in two more runs with a single to shallow left field and Rocky Spencer extended the Aggies' lead to 6-1 with a three-run home run in the fourth inning that scored Lindsay Wilhelmson and Laura Durham.
Richards then hit her first home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning for the Ducks and later drove in Breanne Sabol in the fifth inning to cut the deficit in half, but Texas A&M added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a comfortable 8-3 lead.
Oregon returns to action tomorrow, taking on Ohio State at 3 p.m. PST.
