
No. 20 Softball Takes Down No. 13 Titans, 10-1

PHOENIX, Ariz. B The 20th-ranked University of Oregon softball team knocked off No. 13 Fullerton, 10-1, in five innings in its first game of the Fiesta Bowl Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz., Friday morning. With the win, Oregon improves to 3-2 overall this season while the Titans opened the year 0-1. Oregon pitcher Ani Nyhus improved to 3-0 this season, picking up her third win in four appearances.
The Ducks scored 10 runs on five hits, including a three-run home run by sophomore Beth Boskovich. Junior Ashley Richards finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored and sophomore Dani Baird was 1-for-2 with two RBI.
AThis was a great way for us to come out and start the tournament,@ Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. AWe put together great pitching and great offense and I=m pleased with how we played throughout the game. We never let up.
Oregon put six runs on the board in the top of the first inning to take a commanding lead early. Richards started the scoring rally with an RBI double that scored freshman Suzie Barnes, who had walked to lead off the inning. Richards later advanced to third on a wild pitch by Fullerton pitcher Candice Baker and scored after Baker walked three consecutive batters. Baker then walked Oregon freshman Ann Marie Topps which scored catcher Jenn Poore and Oregon added its final run of the inning when Boskovich scored on an error by Fullerton catcher Jennifer Holt, prompting the Titans to bring in pitcher Brooke Weekley.
Baker helped her cause in the bottom of the second inning, leading off with a solo home run to put Fullerton on the board. Oregon quickly got the run back in the top of the third inning when Weekley walked Oregon shortstop Breanne Sabol with two outs. Sabol stole second and scored on an RBI single by Richards to give the Ducks a 7-1 lead. Boskovich continued the two out rally, hitting her second a home run of the season to score Richards and Poore and extend the Ducks= lead to 10-1.
Oregon plays No. 15 Texas A&M immediately following its win over Fullerton.
