PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Andrea Bills had 17 points and eight rebounds and Carolyn Ganes added 16 points as the 20th-ranked University of Oregon women's basketball team beat Colorado State 62-50 Saturday in the Pap? Jam.
Melissa Dennett had 14 points and eight rebounds to lead the Rams (3-3). Colorado State center Lindsay Thomas had eight points and 14 rebounds, but was just 2-of-10 from the field. The Rams shot just 29 percent as a team.
The Ducks (6-1) outscored Colorado State 17-4 to finish out the game.
"In crunch time, I thought we played smart defensively," Oregon coach Bev Smith said. "We got the defensive rebounds and once we got that defensive board, we were able to run. We practiced yesterday the way we played today."
Oregon led 28-23 at the half, but the Rams climbed back into the game.
Joy Jenkins hit a 3-pointer to give Colorado State a 46-45 lead at 6:14 in the second half. But Oregon went on an 8-0 run from there. Thomas hit two free throws at 3:39 for the Rams, but Oregon went on 9-2 run to close it out.
Oregon shot 36.2 percent from the field and outrebounded the Rams 46-41.
Corrie Mizusawa led all players with seven assists and hit 6-of-8 from the foul line to finish with six points.
"We were looking to pick up the tempo in the second half and we were able to get up the court," said Mizusawa, the Pac-10's assists leader. "We hit our free throws and made defensive stops and that is what wins games."
Ganes shot just 4-of-14 from the floor, but converted all eight of her free throw attempts in a reserve role.
Bills, who also pulled down a team-best eight rebounds, was picked the Pap? Jam's Most Valuable Player.
Oregon next plays host to Montana on Friday at McArthur Court. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
