Women's Basketball Loses 79-60 at Washington
01/23/03 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE, Wash. - Loree Payne proved too much for the University of Oregon women's basketball team, as her career-high-tying 29 points led Washington to a 79-60 win Thursday at Bank of America Arena before 4,299 fans.
Payne scored 18 of her points in the second half, as Washington (14-3, 6-2) recorded its largest margin of victory over Oregon since 1978. Payne hit 9-of-14 from the field, six of her makes from 3-point distance.
The Ducks (6-11, 2-6) battled the Huskies in the first half, trailing just 34-32 at the break. However, Washington came out on fire early in the second half, going on a 15-6 run to lead 49-38 with 14:08 left. Payne had seven of those points during the run.
"We lost some intensity on the defensive end in the second half," Oregon coach Bev Smith said. "We have to make sure to keep that focus and determination for 40 minutes. We have to commit defensively to beat a Pac-10 opponent."
Oregon's road record drops to 1-6 this year, including 0-4 in the Pac-10. It was Washington's eighth straight home win, with its last loss to the Ducks in the WNIT quarterfinals last March.
Freshman Carolyn Ganes was one of Oregon's few bright spots, scoring a team-high 24 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the floor, including 2-of-3 from long range. It marked her third 20-point game this season and was one point shy of tying her career-best. Ganes now leads the team for the first time this year with an 11.4 scoring average.
Oregon lost the rebounding battle for the eighth time in the last nine games, 38-27. The Huskies also had 12 offensive boards, many of which led to converted baskets. Andrea Bills, though, managed to pull down a season-high 10 rebounds for the Ducks.
"Everybody else needs to get that same fire and just go after the ball," said Ganes of Oregon's rebounding struggles.
Oregon went inside to Bills and Ganes early in the game. Bills finished with eight points in the first half, but was held scoreless after halftime.
Three other Huskies scored in double digits as Giuliana Mendiola (13 points), Andrea Lalum (11) and Emily Autrey (11) paced them offensively. Washington guard Kristen O'Neill, although scoring just one point, pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds to go with six assists.
Kedzie Gunderson added nine points for Oregon, which snapped a four-game double-figure scoring streak.
Oregon next plays at Washington State (0-16, 0-8) on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Cougars lost 65-62 to Oregon State on Thursday to extend their losing streak to 40.
